Craster Village Chronology

The following village diary was found in the form of notes on exercise paper that appeared to have been copied from an older source. They were found in William Robert Archbold's collection and are without provenance.

First sent fish to Leeds, Nottingham and other markets.
Started herring sheds for G. Steel
Started Cormack's herring Curing on North Side.
Started to build houses for George Dawson, George Gibbs, Jason Archbold and Cormack; all on the north side.
Great repairs to the Haven by fishermen.
First copper coins came to Craster. Sent by Mic. Patterson, insurance agent.
Sturgeon caught by J. Archbold, North Side and exhibited at Alnwick.
Ed Dawson's house started on North Side.
Regatta at Dunstanburgh Castle with keel boats etc.
Adam Archbold's house started on South Side.
51 cases of small pox in village.
Bark pot rebuilt on South Side.
Started house for G. Simpson.
3 boats went to North Sunderland for J. Dawson. Slates for new houses (Church Street).
John Simpson moved to new house North Side.
Started house for W. Dawson South Side, 5 Church Street
The Well steps laid with whinstone by Craster fishermen.
First day of Infant School in old Eliza's house.
Charles Wood, preacher, conducted religious meetings outside.
Started house for Ralp Archbold, North Side.
Unroofing houses this time (square ?)
Fish 1/- per stone.
New Act for numbering cobles started.
Loss of Ralph Archbold (Ralph the Briton) at South Sunderland.

Great alterations in 'Cortin'.
Great reformation in village. Many gave up strong drink. Charles Wood, preacher.

Tea party at Castle Green for revivalists.
W. Grey started to sell tea.
Great fall of castle tower, called locally the water tower.
Started to build W.C.s in the Square.
